Non-hereditary chief of the Sauk and Fox Indians who urged his people not to resist white advances. After the Black Hawk War in 1832, the U.S. appointed Keokuk chief of the Sauks and Foxes, gave him responsibility for administering a $20,000 annuity, and awarded his supporters 400 square miles of territory on the Iowa River in Iowa. Caleb F. Davis was born in Clarksburg, W.V. and came to Keokuk, Iowa in 1849. He was a prominent businessman and citizen, connected with various Keokuk business enterprises including the mercantile firm of McGavic Chittenden & Co., Imperial Mills and the Keokuk Savings Bank (Davis was one of the bank's organizers and served as its president in the 1870s).
